   About Us

WHAT IS GAMES?

The Georgia Academy of Aviation, Mathematics, Engineering and Science (GAMES) is designed so that scholastic students can earn both a high school diploma, from their home high school, and an associate degree from Middle Georgia College (MGC) simultaneously.

GAMES

resides on the campus of Middle Georgia College, in Cochran, Georgia. Cochran is located in the geographic center of the state. Middle George College is a member of the University System of Georgia and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The purpose of GAMES is to provide an academically enriched residential environment for top-performing high school juniors and seniors seeking to enhance and accelerate their education by simultaneously earning their high school diploma and associate degree.

The curriculum of a GAMES student will satisfy both high school and MGC graduation requirements concurrently. Because graduation from high school is a priority, we work closely with high school counselors to ensure that students take the appropriate classes needed to satisfy both state the local requirements for high school graduation.

Although the name denotes major areas of Aviation, Mathematics, Engineering and Science, be aware that a student can major in any of the programs offered at MGC.

GAMES students have their own Academic Advisor who provides academic enrichment and counseling and works with students to find the appropriate assistance needed in the event that the student begins to struggle academically. Additionally, the GAMES Academic Advisor serves as the faculty advisor for student registration each term and the liason between MGC and other institutions if a student chooses to participate in an undergraduate research program elsewhere.

Students reside in Anderson Hall in suite-style housing with an in-suite bathroom. There are four students assigned to each suite. Due to the age of GAMES students, there are rules in place for their safety.

GAMES students have sole access to Welch Hall, the academic and social hub of the Academy. On the academic side, Welch Hall offers study rooms, a computer lab, and a quiet area conducive for reading or studying. The social side of Welch offers gaming tables, a video room, a TV lounge, and a dropdown projector with surround sound for that "at the movies" experience.

GAMES students may participate in any collegiate club or organization (link to list) with the exception of varsity athletics. GAMES students have their own Student Life Coordinator who advises clubs, plans on-campus activities, and offers off-campus trips strictly for GAMES students.

While most students remain in-state to attend the fine institutions in Georgia and take advantage of HOPE, some students choose to transfer to prestigious institutions around the U.S. GAMES top two transfer institutions are the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Georgia.

HISTORY OF GAMES

The Georgia Academy of Mathematics, Engineering and Science (GAMES) was established in the fall of 1997 and matriculated 28 students.

The establishment of GAMES stemmed from both national and state concerns about anticipated shortages of students sufficiently prepared in areas of mathematics and science. This national concern caused several states to create high school based programs that would attract students to the fields of mathematics and science. As part of the Quality Basic Education Act of 1986, Governor Joe Frank Harris called for high school programs geared toward mathematics and natural sciences in the State of Georgia.

Dr. Joe Ben Welch, MGC President from 1989 to 1998, and administrators at MGC had a broader vision to establish an academy that offered students the advantage of receiving both an associate degree and a high school diploma simultaneously. As a result, a proposal to create a program at Middle Georgia College for students gifted in areas of mathematics and science was drafted and presented to the Board of Regents, and approval for the program was granted in 1996.

MGC is the oldest two-year college in the nation and is a historically residential two-year college. MGC received State College status in 2007 and the addition of the Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management degree program. Following the merger with Georgia Aviation and Technical College in Eastman, Georgia, in 2007, GAMES acknowledged the opportunities in Aviation by adding Aviation to its name becoming the Georgia Academy of Aviation, Mathematics, Engineering and Science (GAMES).
