Three Hardaway soccer players sign with Middle
Georgia College
They have been teammates for more than three
years, playing on Hardaway soccer teams that
reached at least the quarterfinals of the state
playoffs each season. Seniors David Burke, Keith
Lile and Kyle Stewart — each key figures on Rick
Iden’s Hawks soccer team — had the opportunity
to play collegiate soccer separately at different
two- and four-year programs across the South.
Instead, they decided to keep the trio together by
signing Wednesday with Middle Georgia Junior
College . “They’ve really meant everything to the
program, as seniors and as leaders,” Iden
said. “On the field, they’ve led by example. Like
I’ve said in the past, they are not ‘rah-rah’ guys.
They are the ones that come ready to play, and,
whatever the situation is, they will rise to that
occasion.”The three Hawks join Coach Vinny Gill’s
program in Cochran, Ga.. “To get three quality
players like these is unbelievable from one school,”
Gill said. “At my last school, Coach Iden helped me
build a program that was top 20 in the country with
the players he sent me from Hardaway. I’m excited
to have these young men on my team.”The
Hardaway players are just as excited. “I liked the
coaches there, the environment and the players
that were there,” Burke said. “It was just the place
I wanted to go.”Stewart, who had interest from
Huntingdon College, North Georgia and Young
Harris College, said the combination of academics
and athletics at Middle Georgia is an attraction.“I
thought it was the best offer I received,” Stewart
said. Lile said the idea of playing in college with two
players he is familiar with would help make the
transition easier.“It’s going to be nice to know
someone on the team,” he said. “Hopefully, we’ll
get the cohesion faster.” Iden said the Hardaway
trio does what it takes to win. “Whatever the
situation is, I could move them around from year-
to-year,” he said. “Their versatility has been
valuable to us.”

REFUGEE GROUP HOSTED BY SOCCER TEAMS
On Monday, October 13 the soccer teams
hosted a group of refugee children from Atlanta.
The group is part of the
Fugee Family a soccer program began in the
summer of 2004 to offer
children of war an opportunity to escape and
overcome the harsh realities
of their lives. It is the only soccer program
dedicated to providing
playing opportunities for refugee children in
Georgia. Players come from
24 different countries including Afghanistan,
Congo, Sudan, Somalia and
Bosnia. The program has grown from twenty kids
to four boys select teams
and a girls team. All participants are required to
sign a contract
committing to the teams standards and
expectations, they are also required
to attend tutoring sessions to help with their school
work. Being a Fugee
provides a sense of belonging to the children that
don't have a place they
can call home. Prior to coming to the Cochran
campus, the players
toured the MGC Aviation facility in Eastman. "We
were really excited for this opportunity," said
Coach Gill. "Soccer is the most international sport
and it is great that my players can see that there is
a world outside of Cochran which they can join
through their love of soccer. I think it was an
enriching experience for everyone." For more

Program see www.fugeesfamily.org

Three Sophomores Sign for Four-Year Schools
Alyssa Schmucker, Jessica Owens and Manurel
Zapata will continue their college careers after
standout careers at MGC. Schmucker has signed
for Brenau University in Gainesville, GA, Owens will
play at Thomas University in Thomasville, GA while
Zapata crosses the border and will be at Faulkner
University in Montgomery, Alabama next
year. "I'm excited for them," said MGC coach Vinny
Gill. "They are all good players who love the game
and it would be sad for them to not play at a
different level. I am also excited that they have
an opportunity for them to further their education
through soccer. From a MGC perspective, it is
what we are all about. We want to become a
school wher four-year schools look for good
players. This is a nice starting place for us. |
