2009 NJCAA Region 17 Soccer Tournament Play-In Matches Young Harris 2 South Georgia 0 Darton 3 Gordon Final Four Tournament Hosted by Darton College (Albany, Georgia), 30 October - 1 November 2009 Oct 31, Saturday: 6:00 pm Semi-Final I: Georgia Perimeter vs Darton Oct 31, Saturday: 8:30 pm Semi-Final II: Middle Georgia vs Young Harris Nov 1, Sunday: 3:00 pm Final:
On Friday the Warriors came back from a half-time deficit to win 4-2 over Darton College. Harry Lee, Allen Stein, Cameron Black, and Javier Portillo scored for MGC who clinched first place in the South subregion with the win. On Sunday, the Warriors defeated South Georgia 3-1 with Lee, Portillo and Black scoring for MGC. The Warriors finish the regular season with a 14-4 record and an 8-2 record in the region. It now must await the winner of the play-in game this Wednesday to know who it will play next Saturday at 8:30 in Albany, Georgia.
MGC got back to winning ways on Tuesday with a 4-1 win against Andrew. "This was an important win," said Coach Gill," as we had lost three in a row and needed to get back on a roll as we get ready for playoffs. Cameron Black (2), Allen Stein and Juan Carlos Salazare scored for MGC who are now 12-4 on the season. Next up is a game against Darton on Friday at home at 7 where the winner will be the number 1 seed in the playoffs. "It can't get any bigger than that, said Coach Gill
On Tuesday at Nesmith Field, the MGC women's soccer team got back on the winning track with a 12-0 victory against Georgia Military. This was a needed win for the team after two heart-breaking losses the last two games against top ten ranked Darton and Polk. Leading the way for the Lady Warriors were Jana Yates (three goals), Tashana Vincent (three goals and four assists) Laine Hobbs, Kelsey Bush and Jenna Nash. MGC is 8-3 on the season. On the men's side MGC just keeps rolling as it defeated Georgia Military by an 8-0 score. Allen Stein (3), Harry Lee (2) Javier Portillo and Eric Cambron all scored for the Warriors who are 9-1 on the season. "It was a decent performance," said Coach Gill. "We have to be careful not to take our foot off the gas."
MGC defeats Saskelatcheee On Saturday, MGC defeated a dogged Saskelatcheee squad in Allendale SC by a 3-0 score. Harry Lee, Javier Portillo and Alejandro Rivero scored for the Warriors with David Burke and Allen Stein adding assists. MGC is 7-1 on the season.
Thursday was a good day for MGC soccer as both its mens and womens teams defeated Region rival South Georgia. The women started the fare winning by an 8-0 score. Tashana Vincent scored five first half goals while Summer Carter (2) and Jenna Nash also added scores. April Hill and Kiersten Ulversoy shared the shutout. The Lady Warriors are 6-1 on the season and 5-0 in Region play. On the Men's side, the scoring happened early as Javier Portillo scored within three minutes. MGC dominated the first half but could not add to its total, however, in the second half the floodgates opened as a fired up Warrior team scored 3 goals in the space of the first three minutes to put the game to rest. Harry Lee, David Burke and Jose Godoy hit the back of the net for the Warriors with Allen Stein adding an assist "This is a place that has never been kind to us," said Coach Gill. It was important for us to set the tone for the season." MGC is 6-1 on the season and also 4-0 in Region play. Keegan Graham recorded the third consecutive shutout for the Warriors.
MGC Bounce ABAC and Georgia Military On Wednesday, the MGC Lady Warriors got of to a quick start with two goals in the first five minutes and cruised to a 6-2 victory. Tashana Vincent was outstanding with 4 goals while Krissy Freeman and Jana Yates also contributed goals. "It was a big victory," said Coach Gill. "ABAC is one of our biggest rivals and it was our first game in the subregion." On Thursday, the Warriors scored early and often to defeat Georgia Military 15-0. Amad Graves (3), Allen Stein (3), Harry Lee (3), Diego Barrios, Eric Cambron, Juan Carlos Salazar, Javier Portillo, Kevin Farnell and Alejandro Rivero all scored for the Warriors who are now 4- 1 on the season.
