Biography

Wesley Fondal, Jr. Adjunct Faculty in Biology Wesley Fondal, Jr. is the Director of the Department of Defense STARBASE at Robins Air Force Base, GA, STARBASE ROBINS. In his thirteen yeah tenure at STARBASE ROBINS, his first year as an instructor then Director, he has increased the number of students from area school districts attending the program. He has also helped in nurturing a winning network of collaborators and building mutual loyalty, beginning with the Museum of Aviation, where the program is located, and the Museum of Aviation Foundation. He has established partnerships not only with local school districts but also with area businesses and industry to include, Chick-fil-A, Wal-Mart, Zaxby’s, Standard Technology, Wiley Corporation and the Cascade Corp. This past fiscal year, he wrote a successful proposal for a competitive NASA Summer of Innovation Planning Grant that helped plan out the STARBASE 2.0 Afterschool STEM Mentoring Program with a summer component. Wesley and the STARBASE ROBINS staff have been successful in piloting several STARBASE programs such as the Stratasys 3-D printer curriculum and STARBASE 2.0. Wesley and his staff has increased their summer programming to bring to their community much needed hands on instruction in engineering, technology and robotics. He established partnerships with Georgia Tech and Georgia Peachtree Regional (Georgia FIRST) to host the first ever FIRST Lego League Regional Tournament and now Super Regional Tournament in Central Georgia and the off season FIRST Robotics competition, GRITS (Georgia Robotics Invitational Tournament and Showcase). Wesley understands the importance of informal STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education and the impact it can have on the students, teachers and school districts that STARBASE ROBINS serves and in that sense has helped in influencing some of the school districts STEM curriculum planning. He believes that STARBASE has a major role in the informal STEM education community and advocates for that in member organizations such as ASCD (Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development), NSTA (National Science Teacher’s Association) where he has served as the Aerospace Programs Advisory Board Chairman and has recently been nominated for election to the national Board of Directors and the Triangle Coalition for Science and Technology Education, where he serves on the National Board. Wesley enjoys all aspects of science and is also Adjunct Professor at Middle Georgia College and Georgia Military College in the Departments of Natural Sciences. Wesley is a graduate of Dillard University where he received his B.S. in Biology. He received his Master’s Degree in Biology from the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio, TX and attended the University of Missouri for graduate studies and science research in the field of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology. Wesley Fondal also served in the U.S. Army Reserves and has a short teaching history in the Louisiana public school system. He enjoys spending time with his three sons, and even though he resides in Georgia, he is an avid New Orleans Saints and LSU football fan.
