Be Prepared!

The ARC tutors will help guide you through the process of understanding the subject matter; tutors will not do your homework for you. Tutors will provide you with resources and examples about each concept; tutors will not answer questions without challenging you to think.
A student who schedules a tutoring session and who desires to get the most out of their time with the tutor must be prepared and participate in the following ways:

  1. Bring your textbook, lecture notes, and other relevant materials to the tutoring session.
  2. Study your textbook and lecture notes thoroughly before your tutoring session.
  3. Bring pen, pencil, and paper to the tutoring session.
  4. Attempt the assigned problems before your tutoring session.
  5. Identify specific questions and/or concepts that you need help with before your tutoring session.
  6. Communicate the specific questions and/or concepts that you need help with to the tutor during the tutoring session.
  7.  Expect the tutor to ask questions about the material during the tutoring session in order to understand your needs and to provide you with information and strategies tailored to your individual needs.
  8. Expect the tutor to suggest general study strategies to help you improve your overall academic performance. These strategies will help you in all of your courses.
  9. Seek help early!! Do not wait until the day before a test or the day before the assignment is due to seek assistance. Do not wait until you are failing the class to seek help!
  10. Study a few hours each day.
  11. Use other resources to improve your skills such as visiting your instructor during his/her office hours, ask help from classmates, and form study groups with friends.
  12. Keep a positive attitude. Your attitude will determine your altitude in the course.
